3/1/09 Ladies and gents, boys and girls, it's been FIVE WHOLE YEARS since Nate, Jared, Davo and I took the stage at Murphy's on a snowy evening in late February for what would be the first of many semi-triumphant musical excursions at Boone's most intimate, rowdy and incredibly smoky bar we affectionately refer to as Dirty Murph's. Since then, we've played dozens of clubs and festivals in North and South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee, released three records, put a few thousand miles on the van, drank a few thousand beers together, shared the stage many times with Aaron Burleson and added Brent Buckner on the harp. We have also found time between songs to become the best of friends. Not to get all sappy on everybody, but I think I speak for everyone when I say that this personal and musical relationship has meant more to us during the last five years than virtually anything else in our lives. And while I have no doubt whatsoever that we'd have been happy to play in the basements of our old houses on 105 and 194, as well as the garage on Oak Street forever, it's been made infinitely more special because we've shared so many wonderful musical moments with y'all, our friends and fans. Possum Jenkins was initially created for shits and giggles; something to kill time while my other band, Six Foot Groove took a bit of a hiatus. Had I known then that I would spend several nights a year lying wide awake on strangers' floors at 4:30 a.m. trying to sleep after shows, I might have rethought this whole thing. Actually, I wouldn't change a damn thing. Whether it's Americana or country or rock or blues, we try to make music that speaks to our hearts. Fortunately, we've even managed to write a few tunes that y'all dig too. In the end, it's all soul music. And something changes when you realize that people really ARE listening to the words. It begins to make you try harder to create songs that are not only memorable, but also meaningful. Those of you who come out to lots of shows each year, buy our CDs and love our songs keep this band going year after year. While many of our friends are growing up and becoming responsible young adults (some even have KIDS!!!), y'all continue to allow us to live our dream on the weekends (and occasionally on Thursdays) by paying us to play the music we love. We can't thank you enough. Sincerely, David Brewer PS. In April, Possum is heading into the recording studio in Winston-Salem to try and put a new batch of original tunes together for our third studio release. We can't wait to share it with you. PPS. Can we crash on your floor next time we're in town?
